Tour Description

The Bourbon King Ferdinand IV created the Royal Colony of San Leucio – a pioneering social experiment representing an ideal city. The colony was ruled by a Statute of 1789 which established laws following principles such as equality among individuals, equality between men and women, abolition of private property, guaranteed assistance to the elderly and infirm and exaltation of brotherhood. This small industrial city had the largest silk and embroidery factory in Italy at the end of the XVIII century. The Silk Museum displays technical instruments and materials of the San Leucio silk factory.
